Planet Australia

Planet Ephox is proving very useful in getting a snapshot of what everyone at Ephox is up to/thinking. Of course we aren't the only ones with the same idea - there is Planet Apache, Planet Java, Planet Sun and more are out there all based on Planet Feed Reader as far as I can tell.

All of these "planets" got me thinking, is there and should there be a planet which aggregates the best of Australian start-up related blogs out there? I would certainly be interested in seeing a site aggregating all of the news from Atlassian, Tangler, Touchstone and all of the other start-ups in Oz.

So I just got the domain name, now I just have to figure out how to set up the site.

Assuming Ephox is happy to host it, just send me the list of blogs - we've already got a Venus instance running so it won't be hard to set up.

Awesome, will do. At some point I hope to do a CSS layout for it, but I guess some sort of default template would be fine for starters. Hell, the Ephox template sans logo would be fine for now.

Nice idea Andrew. Would be great to get aggregated news.

Hi Bob

Did a few experiments with a word press plug-in about 9 months ago. You set up a normal wordpress blog and then install the plug in. It aggregates RSS feeds and turns them into posts, you can also import OPML. I had about 3000 posts after 30 days.

Just google wordpress rss aggregators.

So by simply uploading a plug-in and then adding 20-30 Aust RSS feeds it will simply turn them into posts and keep ticking away. Some of them need to run cron jobs others manage to keep it running some other way.

I have turned the experimental site off now, but if you want I can dig up the code I used. Its a 2-6 hour job to get it all running from scratch. (much easier than Typepad or Movable type IMO)

Only thing to keep in mind is working out how to make sure the plugin for the post links back to the original site so you are not seen to be scraping.

Let me know if you need a hand.

Mike
